It’s no question, a man in uniform leaves us all weak in the knees. But when handsome man does it as a surprise for his Bride as she walks down the aisle (because she really wanted him to), well, that’s when we enter total swoon territory. Best part? It only gets better from there, so take some serious time to get lost in all the lovely from Jana Morgan Photography right here in the full gallery.

From Jana Morgan PhotographyShelbie and Jake met at the world famous local bar, Duke’s Bar and Grill in Waikiki on a Sunday evening. They have known each other for 2 years before they got engaged in February 2013.

When recalling the story of their proposal, Shelbie happily shares, “Jake picked me up after work under the premise that he wanted to watch a sunset with me before he headed out to sea the next day. We drove to spitting caves on the south-east side of Oahu and hiked half way down the cliffs and stared out at the setting sun. Jake, standing behind me pointed at a kayaker in the ocean, when I turned to him to make a comment about the man (who was going crazy fast, against current) I foundJake on one knee with a smile from ear to ear! Just as he pulled this blue box from his jacket pocket and started to open it a whale breached in the background. He told me how much he loved me, how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, and that I was his best friend. Then asked me if I would make him the happiest man on earth and marry him. I couldn’t stop smiling, speechless for a moment, half jumping up and down as he was trying to put the ring on, I finally said yes and fell into his arms as we kissed. Enjoying the moment together, wrapped in his arms we looked out to sea and at the falling sun, when in the corner of my eye, that same kayaker… yelling applauding cheering and throwing his hands up in cheerful screams… it was perfect. The proposal was private, personal, and in nature. A plus, someone else witnessed it so I know it wasn’t a dream!!!”

When it came to selecting Maui for their destination wedding location, Shelbie explains, “Our life is here in Hawaii. We met here, we live here, we vacation in the islands, so we wanted to get married in a beautiful place we call home. We wanted our guest to experience the islands and aloha we live in.  I always wanted to have a very personal wedding… think old world weddings where it was less about how much money was spent and what trinkets were passed out and more about the couple that was getting married and the two families that are coming together. Maui is beautiful, natural and raw! I love the gardens, beautiful ocean and that calm feeling that overcomes me every time i arrive from Oahu.”

Jake is a naval officer on the USS Charlotte stationed out of Pearl Harbor. When I met with both Jake and Shelbie to talk about their wedding day, I fondly recall Shelbie and Jake asking whether or not Jake should wear his Navy full dress white uniform or a regular grey suit. It was a really hard decision because we were unsure of whether or not the whites would match between his white uniform and her wedding dress.

Come the wedding day, Shelbie explained that the decision was made that Jake would wear his grey suit. She was being so nice and polite about it, but you could tell that she was quietly sad that she would not be walking down the aisle to her fiancé in uniform – she, like many young girls, has always dreamed of getting married to the man of her dreams in a dashing uniform.

After I was done taking pictures of Shelbie getting ready, we were setting Jake up for the First Look where we could capture them seeing each other for the first time. When meeting with Jake under a secluded tree at the resort before the wedding ceremony, Jake pulls me to the side and excitedly announces that he is surprising Shelbie at the wedding ceremony by wearing his formal Navy all white uniform. He knew how excited and happy it would make her. For the First Look, he was wearing his grey suit to help conceal his surprise for later. When the two saw each other for the first time, they were surrounded by their parents and bridal party, and there was not a dry eye as we all watched them together before departing for the wedding ceremony location.

When preparing for the wedding ceremony, Shelbie hid in the estate from all of the arriving guests, while Jake welcomed and greeted all of the wedding guests in his grey suit. Just before the wedding ceremony, we actually had to hide Jake and find a spot for him to change. He slipped away in the moments leading the ceremony to quickly change into his Navy all white uniform, then snuck back to the front of the wedding ceremony site without Shelbie seeing. When Shelbie walked out with her father, she saw him anxiously awaiting her with the biggest smile. The surprise was met with delighted tears of joy.

Shelbie and Jake lived together in Hawaii and will be moving to Naples, Italy, after the wedding for Jake’s next station with the US Navy. We all congratulate the beautiful couple on not only a wildly beautiful wedding day, but on their incredible journey together as husband and wife. May there be many more years of love and delightful surprises.

GSS Featured Wedding :: Jeanne & Chris’s Intimate Hawaiian Wedding :: Zasey Photography

May 23, 2012 By  2 Comments
Happy Hump Day, Lovelies!!! You’re all in for a treat today!!! Man, our submissions just keep getting better and better!!! Today’s fabulous featured wedding comes from Amber Strickler of Zasey Photography, a Houston, Texas based photographer. Amber has been so sweet and accommodating to GSS and we have truly enjoyed working with her on this feature.
Jeanne and Chris were married on April 15, 2012 at Sugarman Estate in MAUI, HAWAII!!  Wow, what an location! Jeanne was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:
Note from Jeanne about her beautiful brooch bouquet (Seen above):  I made my brooch bouquet from scratch. I took me about six months and is a mixture of brooches that have been in my family for a long time as well as new ones. I wrapped stem in silk ribbon topped with a pearl strand and two diamond letters “J” for Jeanne and “C” for Chris. I love this bouquet because I will have it forever because it will never die.
How did you and Chris meet? We met in a small town named Danbury, Texas. I was visiting my sister (she married a man from Danbury also) and Chris was good friends with him. Chris is also from Danbury.  Anyways, we were just hanging out and riding four-wheelers playing in the mud.  We’ve been together ever since. :)
How long have you been together? 5 years
How did your husband propose? I came home after a long 12 hour shift at the hospital (I am a nurse), and he surprised me when I got home.  It was totally unexpected.
Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”? It is a Paloma Blanca dress I  purchased at a store in River Oaks called Mia Bridal Couture.  I LOVE my dress.  I knew it was the one because I didn’t want to take it off.
What persuaded you to have a destination wedding? Chris did not want a huge wedding here at home. Next best thing…..Hawaii!!!!
What sold you on your wedding venue? My wedding coordinator, Tori Rogers, gave me so many options. Sugarman Estate akaHonua Kai Lani was the one we chose and immediately we could tell there was something different about this location. It was very private and basically was a blank canvas for us to plan our perfect wedding.
What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”? I had family brooches in my bouquet that I made as well as new ones. I borrowed a handkerchief from my mom because I knew I was going to cry when I was about to walk aisle and my garter was blue. (I didn’t really put much thought into this tradition.)
What song did you dance to for your first dance? We love Texas country and one of our favorite songs is by Wade Bowencalled “Who I am” the acoustic version.
How did you choose your wedding color palette? I originally had chosen pastel colors, but everything was looking so monotone and we were having a sunset wedding outside in Hawaii so we decided that a brighter color was needed. Tangerine is the color of the year it seems.
Do you have any advice for bride and grooms that are in the planning process?  Having a wedding coordinator is key. Especially a destination wedding-  It is already stressful enough and a good one is essential. I don’t think my wedding would have turned out as great without mine.
What was your favorite part of your big day? Everything. Not a single thing went wrong. If I had to pick one thing, it would be our private Polynesian Revue. It really ended things perfectly for the night.
Floral: Dellables
DJ/Band: We had a Hawaiian trio
Ceremony Music:  Maui Harps
Videographer: Surefire Production
Invitations/Wedding Stationery: Memories of Today
Thank you so much, Amber, for sharing this amazing wedding with us! Please stop by her website and her blog and show her some love! And thank you, Jeanne, for taking your time to answer our questions! We wish you and Chris a lifetime full of love, laughter, and happiness!!! May every day be better than the last!

Alice in Wonderland (aka Maui, Hawaii)

If Alice ever dreamed of the tropics prior to finding herself in Wonderland, it might very well have taken her to this destination wedding in Makena, Maui.
Coming from Australia, California and New York the wedding party was a gathering of creative people celebrating one of their own.
We really enjoyed the design process working with Alicia and Jake.
Better pictures to come soon!

There is this symbiotic relationship between flowers and feathers that creates a special kind of magic.

Add glass, crystals and the light bending special nature of water and you've got just what this fortunate Makena Weddings Bride enjoyed.

Dellables had the wonderful pleasure of working with Laurie and Al Terry at Makena Weddings at this Sugarman estate venue here on Maui.

Fantastic fun!

Mike Sydney Photography & Dellables @ Sugarman's

Love it!  Mike Sydney Photography and the fabulous Sugarman Estate.  ...mahalo Mike!

Elegant, cool & gorgeous are just a few words that come to mind when we think about Sarafina & Paul’s wedding at the fabulous Sugarman Estate. We had so much fun working with this vivacious couple and we know that all of their guests had an amazing time as well!
We started off the day with some pre-ceremony shots of Sarafina, she is absolutely stunning! Her hair was done by Dan Sanchez and the bride did her own makeup!
After that it was time for a sweet first-look shot between the couple before their ceremony. We can’t say enough about scheduling a first-look shot into your wedding day coverage. It’s such a meaningful moment between the bride & groom!
All of the wedding details were flawless thanks to Events by Evonne who provided wedding coordination, Della Peacock of Dellableswho provided the stunning florals and Catering from Soup to Nuts who provided the delectable cake and cuisine.
Their beautiful ceremony was performed by Reverend Dennis DeRego in front of 50 of their family and friends.
The entire wedding party was a lot of fun to work with as you can see by this fun shot of the group!
After group and family photos it was time for their first dance as husband & wife! They danced to I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You by Elvis Presley and their wedding party joined in to serenade the couple!

Before dinner was served the couple enjoyed heartfelt toasts given by their siblings who served as Maid of Honor and Best Man.
We were then able to sneak away with the gorgeous couple for some romantic shots before they danced the night away with all of their guests!

A big thank you to Sarafina & Paul for including Mike Sidney Photography in one of the biggest days of your lives! It was truly an honor and a pleasure and we wish you a lifetime of happiness together!

Today's Lucky Bride

Today's Lucky Bride had only her groom, a minister and a musician to share the beautiful Sugarman Estate out at the end of the road in Makena.

Dellables created her vision of a four posted Chuppah with four floral arrangements, topped with a garland astride a full rose petal pathway.

As usual, the weather was pristine on Maui's southern shore.  The turtles were frolicking without any interference from those pesky oversized mammals the whales.  There were even a scattering of humans out and about enjoying the colorful reef and refreshing waters.

Sugarman Wedding with Events by Evonne

I wanted to add a note to a wonderful wedding we did at Sugarman estate recently. The Coordinator, Events by Evonne really pulled off a magnificent presentation. All the vendors seemed to have come together wonderfully as well as the beautiful Maui weather!

The Bride, Sarafina, was one of the most radiant Brides we have ever seen! Her hair, her flowers were beyond comparison.

Evonne, and the entire crew were wonderful to work with!
